HIIT or Steady Cardio? A Straight Answer for Busy People

Promowinnerhub Team Training Insights Cremorne, VIC
The HIIT versus steady cardio argument is one of those debates that never ends because both sides are half right. High intensity interval training gives you a lot of work in a short window. It raises your heart rate fast, keeps your fitness improving without eating your whole evening, and it fits neatly into a forty-minute lunch break. If your week is packed and you only have three short windows to train, intervals are almost always the smarter choice. Three twenty-minute sessions a week is a real training stimulus, and for most members we see in Cremorne, that is the difference between actually training and talking about it. Steady cardio earns its place in a different situation. When you are training for an event that lasts more than an hour, when you are managing stress rather than chasing a number, or when you are recovering from a hard week of lifting, easy work on the bike or rower is gold. It builds your aerobic base, it does not spike fatigue, and you can do it while your legs recover from a heavy squat session. Walk on the treadmill on an incline, row at a talking pace, or ride the bike and watch something. It counts, even if it feels too easy to be worth anything. The real question is not which one is better. It is which one fits your week and your body states. If you are sleeping badly and your resting heart rate is up, the answer is steady work, not another red-line session. If you feel great and your schedule is tight, intervals will move you further, faster. We usually recommend two interval sessions and one or two easy cardio blocks for most people who are also lifting weights. That mix gives you the fitness gains without frying your recovery, which is where most enthusiastic plans fall apart. One thing worth saying out loud: the best cardio is the kind you will keep doing. If you hate the rower, do not force it. If intervals feel miserable after a long workday, swap them for a long walk. Consistency beats intensity over the course of a year, and the person who does something moderate five times a week will almost always end up fitter than the person who does one brutal session a fortnight and spends the rest of the month recovering from it.
Consistency beats intensity. Show up three times a week and let the small wins stack up.
